Painting “Descent from the Cross” by Domingos Sequeira is at the Soares dos Reis museum

At the end of last year, this painting was surrounded by controversy, because the work ended up leaving Portugal with the authorization of the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage, contrary to expert opinions.

The Portuguese State even tried to buy the painting back, but without success. It ended up being a private investor, Fundação Livraria Lello, who managed to acquire the painting and bring it back to the country.

The president of the Foundation, Rita Marques, tells Antena 1 that from June onwards the “Descent from the Cross” will go to the Soares dos Reis Museum, but before that the painting will still be on display at the Leça do Balio Monastery.

Rita Marques ensures that the commitment is that the painting circulates through national and international museums.

The president of the Livraria Lello Foundation believes that this recovery of the painting is an asset for Portugal due to the rarity of works by painters like Domingos Sequeira.

The protocol is signed on May 18th, at 10:30 am, at the Leça do Balio Monastery, and from one in the afternoon the painting will be on display.

Domingos Sequeira is considered the most talented and original Portuguese painter of his time, having played a fundamental role in the development of Portuguese art at the beginning of the 19th century.
