Blinken buys Taylor Swift album from music store in China. There are photos

O US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, bought a Taylor Swift album this Friday during an unexpected visit to a record store in Beijing, China.

After talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, aimed at easing tensions between the superpowers – and already on his way to the airport – Blinken entered the LiPi record store, in the artistic neighborhood of the Chinese capital, reveals the Reuters agency.

There, the North American governor bought the record ‘Midnights’ (2022)by the artist Taylor Swift. The owner, as a thank you, gave him an album by Dou Wei, a rock artist from the country.

Inside the establishment, Blinken described Swift as a successful American export and called music “the best connector [de pessoas]regardless of geography”.

Asked by the store owner what kind of music he liked, Blinken, 62, said he liked everything, but confessed that he was “a little stuck in the 70s.”

Known as an avid musician and guitarist, he also revealed that he loved vinyl records because of the liner notes.

It is worth remembering that Blinken met with Xi Jinping today, having conveyed concerns about Beijing’s positions on Ukraine and the conflict in the country, but gave a positive note on progress in bilateral cooperation.

“We are committed to maintaining and strengthening the lines of communication to advance this agenda and, once again, to deal responsibly with our differences, in order to avoid any miscommunications, any misperceptions, any miscalculations”, stated the head of North American diplomacy regarding progress in bilateral cooperation, particularly on military communications, the fight against drug trafficking and Artificial Intelligence.

China was also urged to use its influence “to discourage Iran and its proxies from expanding the conflict in the Middle East” and to convince North Korea “to end its dangerous behavior and begin dialogue”, according to said the US Secretary of State.

Today’s meeting also discussed China’s maritime maneuvers in the disputed South China Sea and reiterated the “strong” North American support for the Philippines, its oldest ally in Asia.

This was the last of a three-day visit to the Asian giant, where Blinken also met with the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, and the Minister of Public Security, Wang Xiaohong.

Blinken arrived in China on Wednesday, visiting Shanghai just before US President Joe Biden signed a US$95 billion (around 90 billion euros) foreign aid package, with several elements likely to be criticized by Beijing, including eight billion dollars (about 7.4 billion euros) to counter China’s growing hostility towards Taiwan and the South China Sea.
