From the laughable dialogues to the dull action moments, everything is filmed with monumental laziness by Snyder. At this point it’s not even fun to point out when he’s blatantly plagiarizing the original “Star Wars.” But it’s hard not to turn up your nose when he doesn’t even make an effort to disguise the copy. From the rebels disguised as enemy soldiers, to the Death Star and lightsabers straight out of a discount store, everything seems like a parody. At least “Spaceballs” was funny…
If the concept is a joke, the execution is sloppy. “Rebel Moon” is driven without any sense of rhythm or any emotional impact. Scenes designed to create a connection between characters, such as warriors recounting their personal tragedies caused by the Imperium, are conducted on the basis of inertia. Among a uniformly bad cast, Djimon Hounsou is the only one to maintain a semblance of dignity.
The plot drags on until the climax, with one of the worst battle scenes ever committed by man. There is no notion of geography, the risks are never clear. And each frame, obviously, is slowed down by that clever slow motion, Snyder’s obsession, which makes us desperately press the button. fast forward. We only know that the film is over because, amidst the digital smoke and artificial scenery, the farmers are shouting “we won!”.
Like “Army of the Dead,” “Rebel Moon” is sold by Zack Snyder as a sprawling intellectual property. If his zombie universe lived up to its promise, here he forces his hand to keep from letting go with a plot that refuses to end: we don’t even have time to breathe and our “heroes” are already announcing a new journey. Additionally, the director is finishing his “R-rated versions” of both films. My sins, apparently, will not have peace any time soon.
