“I am very honored by this distinction”

The “regular presence” of Francisco Pinto Balsemão in the cultural life of the municipality of Cascais led to him being honored this Wednesday, May 1st. The ceremony took place at the Teatro Experimental de Cascais, founded by the director Carlos Avilezwho died in November 2023.

“I am very honored by this distinction. The path is followed by looking to the future, that’s what Carlos Avilez taught us”said the founder of the Impresa group, according to the Cascais City Council website.

All the support that Francisco Pinto Balsemão has been giving to the municipality’s culture was praised by the municipal president, who was also present at the site, Carlos Carreiras. “I have been following Dr. Balsemão’s regular presence at TEC, and this is something that makes me very happy”said the mayor.

The ceremony featured several distinct moments: the reading of the main cultural news that appeared in the first edition of the newspaper Expresso, on January 6, 1973; the screening of a short documentary about the life of the former Portuguese prime minister; and the inauguration of a memorial plaque in tribute to Francisco Pinto Balsemão, were the main ones.

In addition, there was also space for performances by the Banda da Sociedade Recreativa e Musical de Carcavelos and the singer FF. The tribute ended with the opening of the exhibition “Expresso – Freedom to Think”which presents a retrospective of the newspaper’s fiftieth anniversary.

Know that Francisco Pinto Balsemão was accompanied by some family and friends, including his wife, Mercedes Balsemão.
