Devastated twice in September 2023 alone, the city lost, in recent days, what little it had resisted the storms. New buildings collapsed. Commerce was destroyed and what little remained has been the target of looting. There is a lack of food, drinking water and medicine. The population is also without water, electricity, telephone or internet.

“It destroyed the city, right? More than it was already destroyed. It had barely started again. The lower part of the hospital was destroyed”, says doctor Vinicius Carvalho.
The help that reaches residents has been insufficient. “There are a lot of people asking here, in Roca Sales, to send news, because they can’t talk to their family members”, observes reporter Luciane Kohlmann. “Mom, we want to say that we are fine, in a shelter. We lost our furniture, but what matters is that we are fine”, says a resident.
