Ministry announces increase in the number of vaccines against Covid-19

19,870 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in Brazil between the 7th and 13th of April, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health. There was an increase of more than 5 thousand cases when compared to the previous week. In addition, 148 deaths were recorded from the disease during this period.

According to the data, the Southeast is the region with the highest number of accumulated cases (11,563), followed by the Central-West (3,560) and South (3,470).

Health management specialist Chrystina Barros explains that Covid-19 is no longer a health emergency and has become an everyday illness, like the flu. “Just like every year we need to get vaccinated against the flu, Influenza, we also need to renew our protection, get vaccinated against Covid. So it is very important that, in each municipality, people pay attention to the call and the publication of calendars”, she points out.

She highlights that like the flu, Covid-19 can cause complications that result in hospitalizations and deaths. The Ministry of Health also emphasizes that vaccination is the safest way to prevent serious cases and deaths from the disease.

The ministry reported that 12.5 million doses of the most recent vaccine against Covid-19 are scheduled to be made available to the population in the next fifteen days. On Friday (19), the department finalized the contract with the company that won the emergency tender. After this phase, it is expected that the new doses will be distributed to the states within ten to twelve days.

Vaccination coverage

According to the Ministry of Health, the number of doses against Covid-19 applied is 518,848,678 to date — including first, second and third doses, as well as booster doses.

With regard to the bivalent vaccine, recommended by the ministry as a booster for people over 12 years of age who have comorbidities — or for adults without comorbidities — the total number of doses applied in Brazil was 35,790,622.

Student Andriely Katrine, 22 years old, lives in Manaus, Amazonas. She claims that she took four doses of the Covid-19 vaccine and that during that time she did not catch the disease.

“Both as a citizen and as a user of the SUS [Sistema Único de Saúde]as academic [de enfermagem] and future health professional, I think it is very important to encourage the culture of vaccination and adhere to it, even with all the reservations we may have, because they prevent us from contracting the disease”, he points out.

For her, the pandemic brought negative feelings to the population, such as stress and anxiety. Andriely says that as people got vaccinated, these feelings diminished, as people were able to leave their homes again.
