AMAJU registers tire shops

-

This week, the Solid Waste, Operation and Final Disposal Management (Gerdest) of the Municipal Environmental Authority (Amaju) continued the work of registering and mapping tire shops in Juazeiro do Norte.

The action aims to control the runoff and incorrect disposal of tires throughout the city, through awareness campaigns. To date, 91 tire shops have been visited and registered.

In the municipality, there is a specific location for the disposal of tires: the Ecoponto do Pneu, located at Rua Engenheiro José Batista, 416, in the Triângulo neighborhood. From the recycling point, the materials are sent to Teresina, Piauí, where they are reused through crushing, lamination and granulation.

From January 2021 to February this year, more than 648 tons of tires were no longer discarded in vacant lots or other inappropriate destinations.

On average, tires can take up to 600 years to decompose. When discarded inappropriately, these materials can become possible breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, responsible for Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya.

Knowing the importance of prevention, Gerdest is also establishing a partnership with health surveillance and the endemic disease sector to reinforce educational campaigns about Aedes, in order to prevent the spread of the mosquito.
