Actor Bruno Gagliasso stated on his social networks that he contracted two different types of virus at the same time: Covid-19 and Influenza A. The 42-year-old actor posted an exam result and said he will rest for the next few days.
Given the repercussion of the matter, many doubts arose about the double diagnosis. After all, is it really possible? According to infectious disease specialist Rúbia Miossi, from Unimed Vitória, the answer is yes. “This is the call co-infectionwhich may be more common at this time of year, given the high circulation of respiratory viruses.”
A detection of double infection it can be done either by the rapid test (which can detect Covid-19 and Influenza A and B) or by the PCR test (which can detect Covid-19, Influenza, respiratory syncytial virus and even other types of respiratory viruses).
There are two possibilities for co-infection to be detected: the person may have had Covid-19 in the last 30 days and the test remains positive. This can also happen with Influenza. Another situation is that the person may have actually been infected by both viruses at the same time.

However, Rubia Miossi highlights that double infection does not mean that, necessarily, the patient will develop more serious illnesses. Special attention should be given to individuals who are part of risk groups, such as immunosuppressed people, people with heart and respiratory problems, and the elderly, among others.
In this context, the specialist highlights the importance of immunization. “If the patient is properly vaccinated against both viruses, the chance of him not having anything serious, just a mild illness, is very high. If he is not vaccinated, the risk increases.”
Because there are two flu syndromesyou symptoms are those already known, such as runny nose, sneezing and coughing. Rúbia details that, currently, there are specific medications to treat Covid-19 (Paxlovid) and Influenza (Oseltamivir). “Both medications are free and available through the Unified Health System (SUS). But there are no indications for everyone to use these medications, without exception. The indication for specific use is for people who are part of risk groups. The most important thing, in these cases, is to follow medical recommendations and prescriptions”, recommends the infectious disease specialist.
