A American Iris Apfel, fashion celebrity and textile expert, died on Friday at the age of 102.

The death was confirmed by Apfel’s commercial agent, Lori Sale, who called the interior designer “extraordinary”. The cause of death was not revealed.

Born on August 29, 1921, in New York, Apfel, with her husband, Carl, ran a textile manufacturing company, Old World Weavers. Specializing in restoration work, she participated in projects at the White House under six US presidents. Among Apfel’s famous clients were Estée Lauder and Greta Garbo.

The North American woman was known for her irreverent way of dressing, mixing, for example, haute couture with pieces found at street markets. With large, round, black-rimmed glasses, bright red lipstick and short white hair, she stood out at every fashion show she attended, the Associated Press (AP) news agency wrote.

Iris Apfel motivated exhibitions in museums and the production of the documentary ‘Iris’, by Albert Maysles, reveals an AP biography.

“I’m not pretty and I’ll never be pretty, but that doesn’t matter (…) I have something much better, I have style,” said Apfel, according to the news agency.

Apfel rose to late fame on social media, amassing nearly three million followers on Instagram. On TikTok, where she talked about fashion and promoted collaborations, the American attracted 215,000 followers.

“Working alongside her was the honor of a lifetime. I will miss the daily phone calls that began with the familiar question, ‘What do you have for me today?'” Sale said in a statement.

Apfel’s fame exploded in 2005, when the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, in New York, organized the exhibition “Rara Avis”, which in Latin means “rare bird”. The museum described the designer’s style as “simultaneously witty and exuberantly idiosyncratic.”

The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, was one of several museum spaces in the country that hosted a traveling version of the exhibition.

Later, Apfel decided to donate hundreds of pieces to the Peabody, including couture dresses, to help the space build what he called a “fabulous fashion collection.”
