On the first night of WrestleMania XL, Sami Zayn defeated Gunther to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
In conversation at podcast Gorilla Position, Gunther spoke about the right options to end his WrestleMania XL reign:
I don’t think there was a right person. I think there would have been some options. Chad Gable is the other one that would have made a lot of sense.
Sami Zayn is definitely one of those where it was, “he’s the right guy to do it.” He is absolutely a fantastic fighter.
He has a natural connection with the audience. He is truly the underdog that people can relate to and understand his struggle.
It’s naturally the personality he has. He doesn’t seem like the perfect athlete. This also helps people connect, because basically no one in our audience is a perfect person.
He’s fantastic in the ring and has been for years. Fighting him on the biggest stage possible and coming out in the best possible way, I was very happy with that.
It was a very successful end to the reign.
