Actor Bernard Hill has died aged 79, his agent announced. The Brit gained notoriety with his presence in audiovisual productions such as ‘Titanic’ or ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

The actor’s agent confirmed to BBC News that Bernard Hill died in the early hours of Sunday (May 5). He is survived by his wife, Marianna, and son, Gabriel Hill.

The actor was born in Manchester, England, on December 17, 1944. Bernard Hill was best known to the general public for his role as Titanic captain Edward Smith in James Cameron’s 1997 film of the same name.

During his career Hill participated in numerous British television series, from ‘I, Claudius’, ‘Crown Court’ and ‘Jackanory’, in the 70s and 80s, to ‘Wolf Hall’, in 2015, which won the BAFTA for best series dramatic.

He also played Théoden, king of Rohan in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, released in the early 2000s.
