That late afternoon cup of coffee can bring interesting health benefits. New research shows that consuming the drink drastically reduces the risk of bowel cancer returning and the chances of premature death.

The study, which joins others that also highlight the strengths of coffee, was carried out with patients in the Netherlands and its findings were detailed in a scientific article published in the International Journal of Cancer.

Coffee against cancer!

  • Data from 1,719 Dutch people who consume coffee shows that the drink can prevent the return of bowel cancer.
  • Compared to those who drank two cups of coffee a day, patients who drank five cups had a 32% lower risk of the disease returning in six years or more.
  • The study also found a relationship between the amount of coffee and the risk of premature death.
  • An average of three to five cups can reduce all-cause mortality by up to 29%.
  • According to the results, there is an ideal amount of coffee that brings benefits. Drinking more does not guarantee an improvement in health.

Previous research in various parts of the world has also highlighted a connection between coffee consumption and longer life expectancy. For example, a 2018 US study found that consuming more than four cups of coffee per day was associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality, including colon cancer, regardless of coffee preparation techniques.

Other research indicates that drinking the drink may offer protection against various types of cancer, including skin, liver, uterine, prostate and even oral cancer.

Why does coffee have this power?

It is not yet possible to say whether coffee consumption is directly linked to a reduced risk of death from bowel cancer or whether there is another protective factor at work. Furthermore, the question of how the drink causes these effects does not yet have an answer. However, current discoveries may help find them:

Although we cannot infer a cause-and-effect relationship in our observational study, our findings may inform future intervention studies and provide evidence to develop guidelines for patients. [com câncer de intestino grosso]
