Against dementia, doctor recommends spoon full of ‘liquid gold’

A The phrase ‘we are what we eat’ has never made so much sense. According to doctor Michael Mosley, there is no superfood capable of curing and preventing diseases. However, consuming a spoonful of olive oil every day can help you live a longer and healthier life.

Mosley, who spoke on the BBC radio program ‘Just One Thing’, said that drinking the equivalent of a spoonful of olive oil on an empty stomach, daily, has many benefits. The doctor explains that olive oil is a powerful ally against inflammation, lowers blood pressure and even stimulates memory.

“Olive oil is also rich in something called oleic acid [também conhecido como ómega-9] which, together with polyphenols, may justify why a little olive oil a day reduces inflammation, improves memory and reduces blood pressure”, he also says.

The wellness guru recommends consuming extra virgin olive oil. The doctor was based on some studies, one of which was published, in 2022, in the scientific journal Nutrients. Scientists followed 25 elderly people with memory problems. Some of them were instructed to consume a daily dose of two tablespoons of olive oil. Those who chose to ingest extra virgin olive oil showed better results.

“A daily dose of olive oil can alleviate chronic inflammation, which is associated with dementia”, argues the doctor, highlighting that inflammation is one of the “biggest problems faced by the body”.

Remember that dementia is a generic term used to designate a set of diseases that are characterized by cognitive changes that may be associated with memory loss, language changes and disorientation in time or space. For the majority there is no treatment. However, it has been proven that around 40% of dementias, such as Alzheimer’s (the most common form of dementia), can be prevented or delayed.

The World Health Organization estimates that there are 47.5 million people with dementia worldwide, a number that could reach 75.6 million in 2030 and almost triple in 2050, to 135.5 million.
