Worldwide, more than 55 million people live with some type of dementia. By 2050, this number is expected to triple. The good news is that exercising frequently – and as soon as possible – can prevent or delay cognitive disorders.

The study was carried out by the Federal University of São Paulo in partnership with USP (University of São Paulo) and published in an international science journal. Research has shown that exercises such as running and weight training can prevent Alzheimer’s disease or at least delay the onset of symptoms. “Strengthening exercises, associated with aerobic exercises, have a greater gain than when done alone. So it is important to combine these two types of exercises”, explains geriatrician Leopold Bussi.

Other studies show that the risk of developing dementia decreases by 35% for people who regularly exercise, even with a generic history. “If a person is going to have a problem with dementia, Alzheimer’s, something like that, it’s as if they leave it later, and sometimes this may not be a problem, depending on how long that person has to survive”, says Bussi .

Incentive in São Paulo

Jardim Botânico Park has an incentive program called “Plan for Walkers”. The majority of participants are seniors and the park opens early, at 6am, for them to exercise. Normal opening hours for visitors are from 9am.
