After almost three decades without any new developments in the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the edaravonea medication capable of delaying the advancement of this rare and incurable disease.
ALS is characterized by the degeneration of the nerve cells that control the muscles, causing weakness and progressive paralysis of the limbs, in addition to difficulties swallowing and breathing, which can lead patients to death.
The new drug does not cure the condition, but protects neurons to the point of containing the progression of the disease. Treatment is carried out with periodic infusions that can reduce the progression of the condition by 33%according to clinical studies with the drug.
Japanese pharmaceutical company Daiichi Sankyo is responsible for marketing the drug, already used in the USA, Europe and Asia.
