Brazil is close to registering 4 million cases of dengue and 1,800 deaths from the disease since the beginning of the year, according to data released this Thursday by the Ministry of Health.

According to the Ministry of Health’s Arbovirus Monitoring Panel, in the first four months of 2024, until April 25, 3,852,901 probable cases of dengue were recorded across the country, more than double all cases identified in the year past (1,649,144) and also the historic record in one year, recorded in 2015, when there were 1,688,688 confirmed positives.

The Ministry of Health also confirmed 1,792 deaths from dengue in 2024, as well as 2,216 deaths under investigation, surpassing the 1,179 that occurred in 2023 and which was the highest number of deaths from dengue so far.

The incidence rate of the disease in the country, at the moment, is 1,897.4 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. The lethality rate in probable cases is 0.05 and in severe cases, 4.43.

The majority of probable cases remain concentrated in the 20 to 29 year old age group, followed by the 30 to 39 year old age group, the 40 to 49 year old age group and the 50 to 59 year old age group. The least affected age group is children under 1 year old, followed by people aged 80 or over and children aged 1 to 4 years old.

The state of Minas Gerais still accounts for the largest number of probable dengue cases (1,167,056). Next come São Paulo (927,065), Paraná (391,031) and Distrito Federal (232,899). The states with the lowest number of probable cases are Roraima (252), Sergipe (3,053), Amapá (4,480) and Rondônia (4,715).
