Influenza vaccine is available for children aged six months to under six years

João Pessoa City Hall warns about the importance of vaccination that protects against Influenza in children aged between six months and under six years of age (5 years, 11 months and 29 days). In the Capital, the target population is 54,082 and only 16.32% of this priority group were vaccinated. Immunization aims to reduce complications, hospitalizations and deaths resulting from influenza virus infections.

Prevention guidance is mainly for children who already attend daycare centers, nurseries and schools. “The crowding of children in these closed spaces facilitates the transmission of the Influenza virus and other viruses, so it is important to keep the booklet up to date. As we are in a preventive campaign against influenza, parents should take advantage of the opportunity to take their child to get the Influenza vaccine”, advised Fernando Virgolino, head of the Immunization Section of João Pessoa. “The best way to protect children from the disease and serious complications is annual vaccination, recommended for children from six months onwards”, he added.

Other preventive measures that must be adopted in early childhood education environments is the constant cleaning of toys and commonly shared items with soap and water. The sick child’s contact with others should be avoided. It is recommended that the child stays at home, in order to avoid transmission of the disease – for at least 24 hours after the fever disappears, without using antipyretic medication.

For Influenza, the following are part of the priority group: children from 6 months to under 6 years of age (5 years, 11 months and 29 days), health workers, pregnant women, postpartum women (those women who are in the period of up to 45 days after childbirth), primary and higher education teachers, indigenous peoples, elderly people aged 60 or over, homeless people, professionals from the security and rescue forces, professionals from the Armed Forces and people with chronic non-communicable diseases and others special clinical conditions, people with permanent disabilities, public road transport workers for urban and long-distance passengers, port workers, population deprived of liberty and employees of the deprivation of liberty system, adolescents and young people aged 12 to 21 years under measures socio-educational.

Documentation – For vaccination, it is necessary to present, in addition to the vaccination card, supporting documents for each group. Professionals who fall within the expansion of priority groups must present an identification document with a photo and proof (declaration, class council card or paycheck) of their connection with the company or institution where they work. People with chronic non-communicable diseases and other special clinical conditions must present a medical report.

Home vaccination – For people who are bedridden and restricted to bed. It is necessary to make an appointment by calling (83) 98645-7727. Vaccines are available at homes, from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 4 pm.
