A question almost as common as the dream of breast plastic surgery is the need for different care for the breasts after the procedure. According to the mastologist at the Goiano Institute of Oncology and Hematology (INGOH), Frank Braga, the answer is no.

According to the expert, having a breast implant does not change the care women need to take with their breast health. “The care routine is the same for patients with or without breast implants. Women with the implant do not need to take specific care with the prosthesis”, he points out.

However, according to Braga, what women need is monitoring, that is, regular breast control. “Which consists of observation, evaluation, palpation, touch, annual consultation with a breast specialist and imaging tests according to each age group – breast ultrasound, mammography or, in some situations, magnetic resonance imaging”, he adds.

The recommendation of the Brazilian Society of Mastology (SBM) for asymptomatic women, that is, who do not present any sign or symptom of pathology in the breasts, nor a family history of breast disease, from the age of 40, is a consultation with the mastologist. In addition, you should have a mammogram once a year, whether or not you have a silicone implant.

Prevention

Mastologist Frank Braga highlights that breast cancer screening in patients with breast implants is the same as that which occurs in women without the prosthesis. The process includes mammography, which can be complemented with breast ultrasound and resonance.

The doctor also points out that “mammograms occur in the same way in patients with breast implants, and an additional incidence is mandatory for these women, which is called ‘Eklund’. This is the scientific name for a maneuver that allows us to separate the breast tissue from the prosthesis and, thus, observe any possible lesion that may be obscured by the presence of the implant. But the prosthesis does not hinder or complicate the examination. And there is also no risk of the prosthesis breaking or moving during the analysis.”

Pain

Regarding pain when performing a mammogram, however, the INGOH mastologist explains that the perception of pain is exactly the same in patients with or without the prosthesis. “It is safe to use the implant and it does not compromise breast cancer screening. Silicone implant patients can and should undergo secondary prevention of breast cancer with mammography”, adds breast specialist Frank Braga.

The institute, a reference in the treatment of breast cancer, has an exclusive space to care for patients with breast tumors. It is “Mama e Amor”, which aims to offer humanized and specialized care.
