MChanging your diet and starting to exercise before the age of 40 can increase your life expectancy by half a decade, according to a study published in the journal BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, which involved 353,000 adults.

Participants were followed for a period of almost 10 years. All people were registered in the UK Biobank, a database with information on more than half a million British citizens).

The volunteers’ information was grouped into three categories of life expectancy, taking into account genetic data: long (20.1%), intermediate (60.1%) and short (19.8%). The data was further classified into three lifestyle scoring categories, including favorable (23.1%), intermediate (55.6%), and unfavorable (21.3%). Those with genetic risks considered high, such as a family history of hereditary disease, had a 21% higher risk of dying before the age of 75.

Still, those who followed healthy lifestyles were able to compensate for their genetic inheritance in two to three cases. People who were sedentary and had a poor diet had a 78% chance of dying early, even if they did not present a high genetic risk.

According to researchers, results are better if changes are implemented before the age of 40. “By age 40, participants at high genetic risk could extend approximately 5.22 years of life expectancy with a favorable lifestyle. Given that lifestyle behavioral habits are generally developed before middle age, it is crucial to raise awareness with high genetic risk to prolong their life expectancy before this age”, they state in the article.
