The latest weekly bulletin on dengue in Mato Grosso do Sul, released this Friday, May 3, shows that there has been an increase in the number of deaths due to the disease. Now the total is 18.

In the previous survey, 15 deaths were recorded. The last three occurred among residents of Ponta Porã and Laguna Carapã, cities on the border with Paraguay that have two of the highest incidences of dengue cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the State.

The three most recent victims are a 75-year-old man from Laguna Carapã, another 85-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman who lived in Ponta Porã. Everyone had chronic illnesses and the elderly man who lived in the first municipality also faced cancer.

There are still 11 deaths under investigation.

Incidence – Juti leads the ranking of municipalities with a high incidence of the disease, followed by Laguna Carapã, Antônio João, Itaquiraí, Vicentina, Iguatemi, Camapuã, Naviraí, Coronel Sapucaia, Ponta Porã and Douradina.

Most of the deaths, in fact, occurred in five of these same cities: Coronel Sapucaia, Laguna Carapã, Naviraí and Ponta Porã. The others where there were records were Maracaju, Chapadão do Sul, Dourados, Laguna Carapã, Naviraí, Sete Quedas, Amambai, Paranhos and Ponta Porã.

Chikungunya – In relation to chikungunya, the State has already registered 3,975 probable cases, of which 449 are confirmed. There are no deaths recorded.

Antônio João is the one with the highest incidence of cases of the disease, followed by Iguatemi, Vicentina, Itaquiraí and Douradina.

Concerned about the increase in cases in the municipality as well, Três Lagoas City Hall issued an alert this Friday (03).

“The danger of Aedes aegypti is not only in the transmission of dengue fever; the mosquito is also responsible for diseases such as chikungunya, zika and yellow fever. Três Lagoas has already registered a 53% increase in positive cases of chikungunya, which is even more alarming when compared to the total recorded in 2023”, says an excerpt from a note published on the city hall website.
