The growing demand for veterinarians and zootechnicians in the area of ​​clinical research involving laboratory animals has contributed to constant ethical questions from both the general public and professionals. Given this scenario, the Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine of the State of São Paulo (CRMV-SP), through the Technical Committee on Laboratory Animal Science, launches the “Manual of Ethical Conduct of Veterinarian and Zootechnician in Animal Science”. Laboratory Animals”.

The document presents ethical parameters focused on the care of animals used in research and teaching activities, and provides guidance on the conduct expected of professionals so that their well-being is considered while promoting scientific and social advancement, benefiting not only professionals in the field, but also society as a whole.

President of the CRMV-SP Laboratory Animal Science Technical Committee, veterinarian Luciana Cintra highlights some highlights and aspects: “The Manual was carefully designed to guide professionals involved in research and teaching with animals, outlining the moral, ethical principles and standards of conduct necessary in animal experimentation.”

Member of the Commission, veterinarian Marcos Antonio Maioli highlights the standards of conduct outlined in the manual. “They reflect the profession’s commitment to animal welfare, transparency in experimental practices, the constant updating of scientific knowledge and the promotion of collaboration and good relationships with multidisciplinary teams.”

The president of CRMV-SP, Odemilson Donizete Mossero, highlights the importance of the Manual in expanding interest and knowledge in animal research within standards of scientific and ethical excellence. “With this additional technical material, we reaffirm our commitment to animal welfare and professional excellence, promoting integrity, respect and compassion at each stage of the research and experimentation process.”

Member of the Commission, veterinarian Giuliana Petri highlights the importance of professionals not conniving with unethical practices and the need to work on compassion and respect for the well-being of animals, the environment and society.

Veterinarian Claudia Mori, who is also a member of the Commission, highlights the emphasis made in the manual on the importance of supervision, record keeping and responsibilities in animal care.

The manual also deals with the relationship between veterinarians, zootechnicians, researchers/teachers and animals. Members of the Commission, veterinarian Cleide Lúcia Araújo Silva and zootechnician Brenda Batista Lemos Medeiros supported the description of profession-specific codes of ethics, highlighting their professional responsibilities and duties.

The publication also provides guidelines for ethical behavior on social media and other means of electronic or printed dissemination. “This chapter aims to preserve professional integrity and avoid unethical practices or image risks for research and teaching institutions”, says veterinarian and member of the Commission, Camila Mota Mendes.
