Mutirão Curitiba sem Mosquito returns to Regional Cajuru and Cidade Industrial de Curitiba (CIC) this week. The joint action of the municipal departments of Health and the Environment seeks to avoid breeding sites for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue, zika and chikungunya diseases.

Residents of the regions where the joint efforts will be held will be notified by endemic disease agents from the Municipal Health Department throughout the week. On designated days, trucks from the Municipal Environment Secretariat collect separated waste for disposal. Check collection dates below.

Cajuru

The agents will travel 18 blocks between Dr. Ivan Jorge Curi and Sebastião Marcos Luiz streets, in the Cajuru neighborhood. House inspections began on Friday (3/5) and continue this Monday (6/5). Debris collection will be on Tuesday (7/5).

CIC

The task force covers 140 blocks near the Nossa Senhora da Luz Health Unit (Rua Emídio Nonato da Silva, 45). House inspections take place on Tuesday (7/5) and Wednesday (8/5). Debris collection will be on Thursday (9/5).

How it works

Endemic agents sweep the land in search of containers that can accumulate water and advise the population to separate debris and garbage from properties.

“The strategy is to intensify joint efforts throughout the city, especially where there are recorded cases of dengue fever”, says the municipal secretary of Health, Beatriz Battistella, who asks for the population’s support in preventing the disease and avoiding stagnant water.

According to the secretary, joint efforts are specific and intervention strategies in the face of the accumulation of materials in homes and backyards. But she warns that Curitiba maintains regular collection of organic, recyclable and special waste, giving citizens several ways to eliminate debris and unusable materials.

Cases

According to the Dengue Panel, updated on Thursday (2/5), the capital of Paraná recorded 702 new cases of the disease since the last bulletin, released on April 24.

In total, Curitiba accounts for 5,731 cases of dengue in 2024 (until April 26), 2,424 of which were imported (in which the contamination occurred outside the municipality) and 3,307 were indigenous (local transmission).

Guidelines

To collect the Mutirão Curitiba sem Mosquito, residents must place the debris outside the property on the date the trucks pass. Minor waste must be wrapped or bagged before disposal.

The joint effort will collect useless objects (furniture, appliances and rubble), recyclable materials (bottles, plastics, iron and metal containers), tires, organic waste and packaged vegetable remains.

Materials with a high weight or volume (such as construction waste), organic waste and unpackaged plant remains, toxic and dangerous waste (light bulbs, medicines, batteries and paint) and transport vehicles will not be collected by the City of Curitiba in this action.

In 2023, the Curitiba without Mosquito joint efforts, coordinated by Health and Environment, collected 348 tons of unusable materials and debris in the ten Health Districts. 14 joint efforts were carried out during the year.

In 2024, 39 joint efforts were carried out and 735 tons of unusable materials and debris were collected.

Ecopoints

Another disposal alternative available to Curitiba residents are recycling bins, places designated for mixed and recyclable waste.

Mixed waste includes construction materials, wood, tree pruning remains, unusable furniture, electronics, used cooking oil and grease.

Waste must be separated and deposited in accordance with the instructions of local employees. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, from 8am to 12pm and from 1pm to 5pm.
