The City of Aracaju, through the Municipal Health Department (SMS), began, this Monday, the 6th, the third household collection of the year to carry out the Aedes aegypti Rapid Index Survey (LIRAa). Monitoring continues until Friday, the 10th, and will cover all neighborhoods in the capital, allowing an analysis of the incidence of the mosquito that transmits dengue, zika and chikungunya.
LIRAa is carried out every two months by Aracaju City Hall, and is essential to guide the combat actions promoted by the municipality. After completing all laboratory analyzes, the epidemiological bulletin is prepared to base adjustments, expansion, maintenance or creation of more strategies.
Agents to combat endemic diseases (ACEs) visit homes and carry out inspections in places with the potential to become mosquito breeding grounds, such as water reservoirs, plant pots, drains, land and tires. Along with this, the manager of the Municipal Program to Combat Aedes, Jeferson Santana, highlights the period of intense rain followed by a heat wave.
“In this period of seasonal transition, although it is raining a lot, the temperature has not decreased, the city remains hot. This greatly increases breeding sites and deposits of stagnant water due to rain and, therefore, LIRAa is very important. We wait for this collection with great care and attention exactly due to the weather conditions that prevail in our city”, reflects Jeferson.
After collection at homes, the next step is sending the samples for analysis. Upon finding the outbreaks, the samples are sent for analysis to the laboratory of the Zoonosis Control Center (CCZ). Once confirmed to be Aedes aegypti larvae, this data is entered into the infestation index. When collecting the sample, the focus is also eliminated to interrupt the mosquito’s reproduction cycle.
