After the end of Czechoslovakia, which was divided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, in 1992, Portugal fell in the first encounter with the Czechs, 1-0, in the quarter-finals of the 1996 European Championship, played in England, but then responded with two victories, also in the final stages of the European Championship.

Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men won 3-1 in the second round of the Euro2008 group stage, in Switzerland, and, four years later, the team led by Paulo Bento won 1-0 in the “quarters”, in Poland.

After these three meetings in the European finals, the two teams only met again in the current edition of the League of Nations and Portugal added their third consecutive triumph, winning in Alvalade by 2-0, on June 21.

In a match on matchday three of the group stage, and after a draw in Spain (1-1) and a thrashing against Switzerland (4-0), Fernando Santos’ “eleven” beat the Czechs without problems, with two burst goals still in the first part.

João Cancelo opened the scoring, in the 33rd minute, and Gonçalo Guedes closed the score, in the 38th minute, and neither player will be able to play on Saturday in Prague, the first due to punishment (two yellow cards) and the second because he was not called up.

Portugal lined up with Diogo Costa in goal, a defense with João Cancelo, Pepe, Danilo Pereira and Raphaël Guerreiro, a midfield with Rúben Neves, William Carvalho and Bernardo Silva and an attack with Gonçalo Guedes, Diogo Jota and Cristiano Ronaldo.

It was the fourth game against the Czechs, in a duel that started in the worst way for the corners, in 1996, in a famous match decided by a “hat” of former Benfica player Karol Poborsky.

The fifth meeting between Portugal and the Czech Republic, of the fifth round of Group A2 of the 2022/23 League of Nations, is scheduled for Saturday, at Fortuna Arena, in Lisbon, from 19:45 (in Lisbon), with refereeing by Serbian Srdjan Jovanovic.
