The Civil Protection Association (APROSOC) demanded this Thursday that responsibility be established in the case of the landslide that on Wednesday hit a house in Palmeira de Faro, Esposende municipality, and killed a young couple. The association says that there are “a set of questions that remain to be answered”.
In a statement, APROSOC questions “what the local authority services have been doing to not have detected that dangerous situation in time”. «Where is the municipal responsibility in the planning of the territory in this case», he adds.
The association also wants to know if the construction of the house was licensed and, if so, «what is the verdict of the geotechnical study». He also asks how many more similar situations exist and “where is the awareness and consequent action of citizens in the detection and reporting of dangerous situations to the services of the municipalities and, if necessary, to the parliamentary groups of the Municipal Assembly”. «How many more victims will it take for them to act?», he asks.
The Esposende City Council said on Wednesday that the licensing process for that house hit by a landslide in which two people died “ran normally”. He also added that he was unaware of any complaints from the owner regarding possible risk situations.
In a statement, the Chamber added that the house is part of a subdivision operation dating back to 1994, consisting of 14 lots. «The licensing process for this house went smoothly, and the existence of any complaint made by the owner of this house regarding any situations that could endanger it is unknown», he said in the statement. He also said that the lot affected by the landslide “has authorization for use, and the landslide area is partially within the delimitation of the same lot”.
At issue is the landslide registered at dawn on Wednesday in Palmeira de Faro, in Esposende, Braga district, which caused damage to two houses and killed two 22-year-olds who were in one of them. By indication of the Civil Protection authorities, the residents in these two houses and in three others existing in the same place were relocated, a situation that will remain until the whole slope slope is stabilized.
