Party atmosphere in Viana do Castelo to cheer for Portugal

More than 500 people are concentrated in a giant tent in the center of Viana do Castelo to watch Portugal’s debut in the World Cup in Qatar, confident that the selection will beat Ghana.

Flags, balloons and trumpets echo in the heated space, with bars and games like table football, which attracted mainly young people, students, who took advantage of the afternoon free of classes to watch Portugal’s opening game together.

Colleagues from the secondary school in Monserrate liked the “cozy environment” and “fun”, considering that it is “much better” than being at home “alone” watching the game.

“We’ll win. I have no doubts”, said Guilherme Castro.

On the controversy surrounding the World Cup in Qatar, the 16-year-old said that Portugal had to support its team: “The rest is FIFA’s fault, which only wants money”.

In the stands, the older ones wait for the start of the game, pleased with the temperature of the giant tent, “much more pleasant” than on the street, where the rain took a break and the sun tries to peek through the clouds.

João Couto, 62 years old, found a way to leave work to come and see Portugal’s World Cup debut.

Confident of victory, he criticized Qatar’s choice, but said that it was necessary to look at the positive side: “Thus, Qatar, women, human rights are under the spotlight of the world”, he said.

Portugal makes its debut today at the 2022 Football World Cup, in Qatar, looking to start the competition with a triumph against Ghana and gain momentum for the ‘battles’ that follow with a view to qualifying for the ‘eighth’.
