All recommended walking routes in Madeira, the so-called ‘levadas’ which are one of the main tourist attractions in the region, are closed from 00:00 onwards due to weather alerts issued by the authorities, it was announced today.

“The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) hereby informs you of the closure of all recommended pedestrian routes in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, as well as the support infrastructures for them, from 00:00 on December 4th “, can be read in the information issued in the archipelago.

The IFCN adds that this measure is in force “as long as the warnings issued by the competent authorities regarding the adverse weather conditions that will be felt in the region remain, namely persistent precipitation and strong wind”.

The same statement indicates that any activity in forest areas is not recommended and that the road that connects Eira do Serrado (Curral das Freiras) to Pico do Areeiro, one of the highest points on the island of Madeira, also very popular with visitors, “will be preventively closed in that same period”.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere has placed the Madeira archipelago under yellow warning for strong sea agitation, wind and precipitation, which in the case of rain will be aggravated to orange between 12:00 am on Sunday and 00:00 am on Monday.
