The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) announced that it had seized 73,000 liters of counterfeit olive oil, in the district of Portalegre, for an amount of almost 800,000 euros.
Following an inspection action directed at an extractive industry for the production/packaging and sale of olive oil, based in the district of Portalegre, ASAE also learned 116,000 labels and various probative and evidentiary documentation of the repeated practice of the offenses in question.
The value of the seizure amounted to a total of 799 thousand euros.
In a statement, ASAE states that during the action it was found “in flagrante delicto that the economic operator proceeded to fill thousands of containers labeled as olive oil with an oily substance, which is suspected to be olive pomace oil. Extra Virgin”. These were subsequently packaged in their own packaging and expanded to the national and international market.
In the same communiqué, ASAE states that it has instituted a criminal proceeding, for fraud regarding counterfeit abnormal goods and foodstuffs, and that an individual has been constituted as a defendant and subject to the coercive measure of the Term of Identity and Residence
During the inspection, 22 samples were collected from all oleic products detected on site, which were sent to the ASAE’s Food Safety Laboratory to determine the physical-chemical and sensory characteristics of the oily substance seized.
