Of the more than five thousand workers at the Volkswagen car factory in Palmela, in the Setúbal district, only 3,865 exercised their right to vote, 2,007 of whom voted against the pre-agreement and 1,826 in favor. There were also 10 null votes and 22 blanks.

“The result of the referendum confirms that the majority of workers consider that the pre-agreement reached is insufficient and that this proposal for a salary increase of 5.2% has to be improved”, Eduardo Florindo, from SITE Sul, Sindicato of Workers in the Transforming Industries, Energy and Environmental Activities of the South.

“There is no other path but to continue the struggle for an extraordinary increase in wages”, added the unionist, recalling that it is up to the workers to decide whether they are going to present a counter-proposal to the company or go ahead with possible forms of struggle.

In this regard, SITE-Sul has already announced that it will convene several plenary sessions of three hours each, on the 13th (07:00/10:00 and 15:20/18:20), from 23:40 on the 13th to 02:40 on the 14th, and one last plenary to be held from 07:00 to 10:00 on the 14th of December.

Initially, Autoeuropa workers claimed an extraordinary salary increase of more than 5% in December, plus the 2% that was already previously agreed for January 2023, but the pre-agreement that has now been failed provided for only a single increase of 5.2 %.
