The death of the German shepherd was announced by the Secretary of State for Defense of Mexico.

The Mexican government mourned early Saturday the death of Proteo, one of the ten dogs sent by the country to Turkey to help with search and rescue efforts for victims of the earthquake. It is still not known what caused the death of the animal, but it will have occurred during the work among the rubble.

The death of the German shepherd was announced by the Secretary of State for Defense of Mexico. “Thank you Proteo for your heroic work, you fulfilled the Mexican army’s doggy mission,” reads a tweet.

The dog was one of the animals between 3 and 8 years old sent to Turkey: the others are called Tardio, Kiara, Teología, Timba, Barato, Territorio, Balanceo, Bureta and Biósfera.

Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón recognized Proteo for “exalting the name of Mexico and our people”.

The words of his handler, Villeda, were shared on the Defense Secretariat’s TikTok: “I can only thank you for bringing me. Regrettably, you will not return with me. We will see each other again some day.”
