The event “Sabores no Barro” starts today in the parish of Beringel, in the municipality of Beja, and runs until the 26th of March.

The event, which was suspended due to the pandemic period, returns with news and high expectations.

Rádio Campanário spoke with Vitor Besugo, president of the Parish Council of Beringel, who told us about the return of the event, the news and expectations for this edition of the event, in which he began by telling us that “the big news this year, in the return of “Sabores no Barro”, after the pandemic years, is the same day dedicated to schools, which is today, when our craftsmen went to primary schools and 2nd and 3rd cycle schools, to pass the tradition and teach how to work with clay and talk about the difficulties they had in their lives in the past, which was a very hard life and, therefore, it is important to pass on to the younger ones the pottery tradition in the parish of Beringel. Otherwise, the format is the same, it is customary to say that the team that wins does not change, we will have the same as in other years, with some occasional changes”.

Asked about the expectation of visitors, after the interruption of the event due to the pandemic, the president of the parish of Beringel began by mentioning that the expectation is “very high, because due to the pandemic a certain anxiety was created in people, and I can see from the overnight stays, both in Beringel and in the area where there are no rooms available and they call me all the time to find out if they can find rooms. The number of exhibitors is also very limited, we can no longer register anyone. This week we received many registrations, but unfortunately we had to close them, because it is not possible, with the space we have, to have more exhibitors”.

“Then we also have a range of ambassadors of great importance, we have António Zambujo, Buba Espinho, António Caixeiro, Antelmo Serrado and Bruno Chaveiro, who just by name, people adhere more to see them, knowing that they will not be concerts organized by them , but rather unique shows where they get together, sing with people and sing with what their heart tells them at that moment, there is nothing prepared because they don’t do rehearsals, because, with the caliber they have, they don’t even need it”, he added.

Asked about the highlight of the event, Vitor Besugo said that the highlight of the event is “the food served on a clay plate, in which the person pays the symbolic amount of three euros, can keep the plate and, at the same time, taste the traditional food. We combine three moments that are pottery, gastronomy and the Alentejo song, in which people eat on a clay plate, while listening to the Alentejo song and can, at the same time, observe our masters working in the pottery. It is the fusion of these three areas that is the great ex-libris of “Sabores no Barro”.

According to the mayor, the Parish Council of Beringel receives support from the Municipality of Beja and also from the IEFP, through an application made to the craft programme. In addition to the support, the artists who will perform at the event will do so free of charge in order to also support Beringel.
