The Minho Business Association (AEMinho), when reading last Sunday’s election results, called on the new elected officials to be responsible for putting Portugal’s stability first.

“In conjunction with the news that has been made public about the different positions of the political forces involved in this process, AEMinho understands that it is essential to take into account relevant and decisive factors for the future of the country and the Portuguese economy”, it says in a statement .

“In a democracy, the will is expressed by voting. It is crucial that electoral results are interpreted in a way that faithfully reflects this will. Therefore, it is imperative to respect the distribution of votes and the resulting correlation of forces, ensuring that all are duly considered. In this sense, it is essential to respect the distribution of votes and the correlation of forces resulting from this same distribution. In a democracy the aim is that no one is ignored. All party forces involved in the country’s political scene have a constitutional and moral obligation to act in this way, in strict respect for the electoral results that are a mirror of the will of the Portuguese people”, he adds.

AEMinho remembers that “the country is going through a crucial moment for the future of its economy. It is important that everyone understands that government stability and viability are today, more than ever, vital to guarantee the economic growth we desire, with the creation of the necessary conditions to maintain and increase the attractiveness for foreign investment, the creation of wealth that they are the only way to guarantee better wages and better living conditions for the Portuguese”.

“We call on all political forces to reflect on their role, resulting from the elections, in the country’s democratic framework and to put Portugal’s interests ahead of their own interests. Government viability is essential and the Portuguese created, through voting, all the conditions so that, with responsibility and a spirit of cooperation, the country’s governability be assured. Even though this is a new scenario, it should not generate negative alliances, it should generate the consensus that this new framework imposes. Holding an elected public position is exactly understanding that the path dictated by voters, even when it does not represent our starting point”, he concluded.
