“My wife and daughters love Portugal. Everyday life is full of happiness”

Ropeno Martinez was the grand guest of Daniel Oliveira in another broadcast of ‘High Definition’.

The SIC interview program began by addressing the issue of the Portuguese language, which the Spanish national technician insisted on learning immediately. “I know all the words I need to work, but I would like to improve my Portuguese because, for me, day to day life is important, being able to talk to the fans and being able to feel what the Portuguese people feel about the team. To do that, I need more vocabulary”he responded.

Roberto said that he continues to take intensive Portuguese classes almost every day, admitting that he has a good teacher. “I would like to have perfect Portuguese, but I need more time”he completed.

The former player confessed that he is already a “fan of Portuguese stew” and that he really likes our country’s cuisine, as it has several similarities with Spanish cuisine.

The coach also spoke about his daughters, Luella, 10 years old, and Safiana, four. Regarding the girls, the result of his relationship with Beth Thompson, Roberto says he just tries to give them the message that “they can do whatever they want in this life, but with the most important values”.

Roberto Martínez confessed at this point in the interview that the biggest difficulty he felt in the process of adapting to Portugal was the fact that he had to wait for his family to arrive: “I arrived last January, it was important to be alone because I needed to meet the players, to travel a lot… For me, having my family at home is when it actually becomes a home. From January until April, my family has been away. Now we are complete.”

The coach also assumed that fatherhood changed his life and that the “ultimate goal” now is for his daughters to be happy. “It’s the priority,” he noted. “The important thing is that when we are with our family, our thoughts are not on the office. I learned to use my time in the best way possible and never feel like I have to do what I can’t do. The balance is very good, my wife and my daughters love Portugal and everyday life is very happy. For me, it’s much easier”he completed.

About his wife, Roberto Martínez said: “She’s the coach at home, I like that. I get home and she organizes the structure. My wife always has a different vision than mine. She’s Scottish and I’m Iberian, we have a very healthy difference of opinions for me.”

Admitting to being a “man of faith”, Roberto considered the possibility of leading Portugal to a new European title. “We can, the most difficult thing is when we don’t have the vision of what it means to be champion. Portugal was champion of Europe, we have the experience, players in the dressing room and technical team who were champions. The talent, the commitment that I saw in the qualifying phase gives I have confidence. The talent is world class and the commitment was exemplary, now it’s time to be prepared for a difficult and adversity moment”he stressed, referring to the European Championship, which starts on June 14th this year.
