O Global Happiness Report for 2023 It was published this Wednesday and Portugal came in 56th, maintaining its position from last year. But young people are happier than the elderly.

The data comes from a study carried out by the University of Oxford in partnership with the United Nations and Gallup, a company that develops opinion studies.

As has happened in previous years, the first places on the list are the countries of northern Europe, contrasting with the developing countries that are at the bottom of this list, with Afghanistan in last place.

For the first time, the index created in 2002 includes an assessment by age. In the classification of happiness of young people, Portugal climbs a few positions, settling in 46th placewhile in the elderly index, it drops to 63rd.

In this aspect, Portugal differs from the trend in the rest of Europe: “In Norway, Sweden, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Spain, the elderly are now significantly happier than the young, while Portugal and Grácia reveal the opposite pattern”, indicates the document.

However, not everything is bad news for the good national mood. If we evaluate the evolution over the last 15 years, Portugal takes a leap in the global ranking to 26th position.

The index evaluates happiness based on six categories which include Gross Domestic Product, social support, healthy life expectancy, among other indicators.
