Hoteliers in the Algarve region want to build housing to hire workers and combat the lack of labor in the tourism sector. In this sense, they ask the Government to make land available at affordable prices, said the president of the Association of Hotels and Tourist Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA), Hélder Martins, according to Lusa, cited by Eco.

«We have been asking for the creation of a pool of available land that can be made available at acceptable, non-market prices, to build housing considered social to accommodate hotel employees», he said, adding that «the lack of “decent and affordable housing is the first problem to combat the lack of labor in tourism and to retain talent in the region».

However, to date «We did not receive any response, although everyone considered the proposal to be very good.», highlighted Hélder Martins. For the president of AHETA «this is the ideal time» to meet the wishes of hoteliersgiven that the review of municipal master plans (PDM), planning and territorial planning instruments is taking place.

«We consider the ideal time to introduce this intention: the creation of a land exchange so that they are sold outside market prices and to construction of housing within the social housing regime», he reinforced.

The person responsible added that the objective “is that it can build housing of various typesoutside areas of tourist influence, four or five kilometers away from the hotel, to later be made available to employees».
