The National Maritime Authority (AMN) and the Navy warn of worsening weather conditions and maritime unrest for mainland Portugal, starting this Monday afternoon, and for Madeira, on Tuesday.

In a statement, the two entities ask the general population not to walk or do activities near the sea, and to avoid accessing and staying near cliffs and cliff areas.

They also ask the fishing community and recreational boaters, who are at sea, to return to the nearest port of shelter and to take precautionary measures, namely to reinforce the mooring and surveillance of vessels and to monitor the evolution of the meteorological situation, avoiding going out to sea until conditions improve.

The AMN justifies that a considerable worsening of weather conditions and sea disturbances is expected on the western coast of mainland Portugal between 12:00 pm this Monday and 12:00 pm on Saturday.

“Sea agitation will be characterized by swells coming from the Northwest, with a significant height that could reach eight meters and a maximum height of 14 meters (…). The wind may register an average intensity of up to 65 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gusts of up to 120 km/h, coming from the Northwest quadrant”, he specifies.

15 DISTRICTS UNDER YELLOW NOTICE

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed 15 districts of mainland Portugal and Madeira under yellow warning due to forecasts of snowfall, strong rain or wind and sea disturbances.

Snowfall warnings are valid until Tuesday for the districts of Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Bragança, Coimbra, Viseu, Braga, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo and Leiria.

Warnings of sea disturbances and strong winds are valid for Tuesday in the districts of Aveiro, Coimbra, Braga, Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria and Beja.
