The national debuts of the North American Kara Jackson and the Japanese goat (jp) are some of the highlights of the programming for the spring and summer of 2024 at gnration, in Braga.

Other highlights are Lætitia Sadier, the vocalist of Stereolab, the North Americans Shabazz Palaces, xullaji and Rafael Toral.

The program also includes the July is Jazz festival and, in the exhibition area, there will be pieces by emerging European artists and students from the University of Minho.

Rafael Toral, the name of experimental music made in Portugal, opens the four-month period, on May 3rd, with “Spectral Evolution”.

On May 22nd, Shabazz Palaces returns with Exotic Birds of Prey, an album that will be released at the end of March. This will be the third visit to the gnration of the project headed by hip hop musician Ishmael Butler.

On May 25th, it will be Ruído Roído’s turn to present a new work created from scratch within the scope of this program. The show will also feature a visual component orchestrated by students from the Masters in Media Arts at the University of Minho.

Lusophone hip hop figure, xullaji, also known as Chullage, presents the pan-Africanist manifesto of pretau 1 – xei di kor, on June 1st. The work combines the heritage of African music, from batuko and quilanpanga to electronic music, dub and hip hop.

Stereolab’s leader and vocalist, Frenchwoman Lætitia Sadier, will be at gnration on June 2nd, with “Rooting for Love”, her most recent solo work, released in February this year.

On June 15th, Kara Jackson makes her debut in Portugal, with her debut album “Why does the Earth Gives People to Love?”.

The Radioografia cycle will once again place young composers from Braga at the center of the stage, this time with Inês Malheiro and the show Volatile Poem.

Goat (jp), a Japanese band led by Koshiro Hino, will perform on July 19th, with the work “Joy in Fear”.

As for July is Jazz, it includes concerts by Carlos Bica, Mário Costa and Bruno Pernadas with Héloïse Lefebvre and Gileno Santana (July 4th), André Pizarro Pepe (July 6th), Marie Krüttli Trio (July 11th) and Hedvig Mollestad Trio (July 12).

In the exhibition program, there will be a second edition of EMAP Perspective, an exhibition that brings together works developed in the context of artistic residency in institutions of the European Media Art platform EMAP.

The exhibition can be visited free of charge from May 9th to August 17th, and is part of the INDEX art and technology biennial program.

In August, there is a free open-air cinema, with the return of Cinema no Pátio.

The cycle curated by director Eduardo Brito will show in Braga the films “Não sou nada – the Nothingness Club”, by Edgar Pêra (August 1st), “Retrato de uma Rapariga em Chamas”, by Céline Sciamma (August 8th), “Paraíso, Probably”, by Elia Suleimane (August 22), and “Close your eyes”, by Victor Erice (August 29).

Establishing bridges with the University of Minho, gnration hosts the performance of young instrumentalists, Music Degree students, on June 5th.

The Visual Arts Degree exhibition takes over several spaces at gnration from the 5th to the 15th of June.

The orbit cycle will continue to take new pieces by national and international artists to the digital world.

On gnration’s YouTube channel, sound artist, producer and DJ Vanderley Neves, better known as Van Der, releases, on May 22, a new sound piece created during an artistic residency at gnration.

Jogo Cruzado, a partnership between gnration, Culturgest and Canal180, also returns on June 26th.

In the fourth volume, Luís Sobreiro makes the film for a musical composition by Coby Sey and the duo formed by Mariana Dionísio and Leonor Arnaut sets music for a film by Felipe Rios Fuentes.
