NIn a Lusa review carried out at 11pm, José Rodrigues, operations officer at the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), highlighted that 2,899 operational personnel were involved in these incidents, supported by 1,006 ground resources.

The most affected areas were Greater Lisbon, Setúbal, Oeste, Coimbra and the Porto Metropolitan Area.

“There were also some occurrences in more inland areas, Bragança and Vila Real, more related to strong wind and precipitation in some areas”, he further indicated.

In a report prior to Lusa, ANEPC had identified between 7am and 3pm today 280 incidents due to bad weather, the majority of which were related to falling trees and structures due to the wind. Between 00:00 and 07:00 today, 100 incidents had been recorded across the continent.

José Rodrigues highlighted that so far ANEPC has no record of victims related to bad weather.

The official also stressed that more incidents are expected in the coming hours, recalling the alerts and recommendations already issued by Civil Protection.

Based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IMPA), Civil Protection warned on Monday of the possibility of wind, sometimes strong, in the highlands and on the west coast with gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour (km /H).

The IPMA predicted rain, sometimes heavy and persistent, which could be hail and accompanied by thunderstorms and strong sea agitation with waves from the northwest on the west coast, reaching six to seven meters north of Cape Carvoeiro (maximum height of 12 meters).

For the highlands, especially in the north and center, forecasts pointed to snowfall, gradually lowering the level to 600/800 meters.

After a weekend with heat and dust from North Africa, ANEPC warned of slippery road surfaces due to the possibility of accumulation of ice, snow and the formation of water tables and the possibility of snowfall in areas and at altitudes where usually does not occur.

ANEPC also warned of drainage difficulties in urban systems, flooding in historically more vulnerable locations, possible accidents on the coast due to strong sea agitation, flooding in urban areas, the possibility of falling branches or trees, as well as the impact of infrastructure associated with communications and energy networks, damage to mounted or suspended structures and thermal discomfort in the population.

Civil Protection recalled that the impact of these effects can be minimized, mainly through the adoption of appropriate behaviors, therefore, and particularly in historically more vulnerable areas, the adoption of the main preventive measures for these situations is recommended.
