Fernando Salgueiro Maia was the first face of 25 de Abril. It was he who overcame the weak resistance of the dictatorial regime in Terreiro do Paço, and it was he who surrounded the Carmo barracks, where Marcelo Caetano was. All without causing victims, as was his priority.

Listen here to the biography of this Portuguese soldier, who was born in 1944 and died in 1992.

Retratos de Abril is a journey around the 25th of April. Listening to the sounds of the time, he tries to capture that historical time. It meets military and politicians, but also civil society that opposed the Estado Novo and fought for freedom. From generals and captains to political leaders; from writers and poets to lawyers, doctors and university professors.

Retratos de Abril reveals a society that, after all, was not black and white.

In 25 episodes, the story of the protagonists who, 50 years ago, were ready to build democracy is told.
