Portugal was ranked 8th among democracies, now it is in 26th place. Last year there were 17.6% of precarious contracts in the country

Portugal occupies the 26th place among the most democratic of the world, in a table with 179 countries — and, as we already knew, it is not a full democracy.

The annual Variety of Democracies table, shared this Sunday by the Público newspaper, now shows a four-seater fall in relation to 2022.

Two years ago Portugal occupied 22nd position, in a “championship” where it reached 8th place, in 2019.

71 indicators are at the base of this list: civil liberties, judicial system, control of parliaments, among many others.

Portugal essentially fell into the following criteria: media, justice system, quality of public administration and trend of parliamentary majorities after the “contraption”.

Tiago Fernandes, coordinator of the study in Portugal, said that, despite the drop, Portugal is in the “house of 20% of the most democratic countries in the world“.

A Denmark It is the most democratic country. Sweden and Estonia follow. At the bottom are Myanmar, North Korea and Eritrea. The lowest ranked European country (173rd) is Belarus.

At the top of precariousness

Within the European Union, Portugal was the second country with the highest percentage of precarious contractsin 2023.

Eurostat figures, shows Jornal de Negócios, place Portugal with 17.6% of precarious contracts – still below, for example, 22% in 2018.

Precariousness is understood as temporary, seasonal, specific to training or internship.

Portugal overtook Spain and Italy. He went from fourth to second place and now he only sees Netherlands ahead of you, with a high rate of 27.2%.

Lithuania, Romania, Latvia, Bulgaria, Estonia and Slovakia have the lowest percentages.

Last year the average precariousness rate was 14.4% in the Euro Zone and 13.4% in the European Union.
