This year, Portugal is represented by blues veterans with touches of rock, soul and funk, Kiko Pereira & The Blues Refugees, a band from Porto. The festival is promoted by the European Blues Union, and then arrives in Portugal through Trovas Soltas, this time in partnership with Doctor Blue and Much More, and with the “invaluable” support of Braga City Council.

Adalberto Ribeiro explains that the choice of the Minho city “came up in conversation with Budda Guedes”, a well-known musician who has a blues festival in Braga. “We then went to speak to the Chamber, who immediately embraced the project”, he reveals.

The person responsible also emphasizes that the event goes far beyond the competitive aspect: “There are many activities, such as a Blues Market, the Blues Expo, workshops. Basically, in addition to music, it is also a space where contacts are made”, he explains.

It also aims to be, very much in the spirit of the genre, a meeting place for music lovers – not just blues. Especially because, Ribeiro concludes, “the blues is like the mother of all non-classical music”; a transversal language.

The European Blues Challenge 2024 takes place at Espaço Vita Braga. Tickets range from €25 for a daily ticket to €60 for a 3-day pass and can be purchased on ticketline – where the passes appear to be sold out.
