The President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa today decorated three military personnel, Rádio Renascença, the University of Minho and Alberto de Sousa Martins, face of the academic revolt in 1969.
UMinho was awarded the degree of Honorary Member of the Order of Public Instruction, with the institution’s rector, Rui Vieira de Castro, receiving the insignia.
In a ceremony that took place at the Palace of Belém, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa decorated Lieutenant-General José Augusto de Barros Ferreira, Lieutenant-General Francisco Xavier Ferreira de Sousa and Lieutenant-General Hermínio Teodoro Maio with the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Avis, according to a note published on the presidency’s website.
In that ceremony, he also imposed the Medal of Military Merit, Grand Cross class, on Lieutenant General Rui Davide Guerra Pereira and Lieutenant General Eugénio Francisco Nunes Henriques, it can be read.
Also today, the Portuguese head of state decorated Alberto de Sousa Martins, the face of the academic revolt in 1969.
“At the time that marks the 55th anniversary of the 1969 Academic Crisis, the President of the Republic decorated, in a ceremony at the Palácio de Belém, Alberto de Sousa Martins, President of the Academic Association of Coimbra at the time, with the insignia of Grand Officer of the Military Order of Christ”, says the presidency, in another statement.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also posthumously decorated the architect João José Sousa Araújo with the rank of Commander of the Order of Merit, with the honoree’s daughter receiving the insignia.
Ana Francisca Machado Jorge and Jorge Manuel Rasteiro Bonifácio, the two oldest workers at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology, were awarded the rank of Officer of the Order of Merit.
The President of the Republic also today decorated Rádio Renascença with the degree of Honorary Member of the Order of Public Instruction, having received the insignia from “the President of the Management Council of the Renascença Multimédia Group, Cónego Paulo Franco, in the presence of Cardinal Dom Américo Aguiar” , the presidency also highlighted in a statement.
