BE coordinator, Mariana Mortágua, stated this Tuesday that her party and PS make a common assessment of the dangers of a possible constitutional review that may be proposed by parties on the right.

At a press conference, at the national headquarters of the Bloco de Esquerda (BE), in Lisbon, Mariana Mortágua said that “this was one of the issues discussed” in today’s meeting with the PS.

According to the BE coordinator, between the two parties “there is an agreement and a common assessment regarding the dangers of a constitutional review and about not letting democracy become entangled in debates about setbacks, about loss of rights”.

“This assessment is joint. We will see how it translates into the parliamentary space in the coming moments. A door for dialogue is open between the two parliamentary leaders, in this case, so that we can evaluate and articulate, in this matter as in many others”he added.

Before this press conference, BE met today at the national headquarters of the PS, thus concluding the cycle of meetings that it proposed on March 12 to “open a path, a field of dialogue with the parties on the left, with the environmentalist parties , who oppose this right-wing Government”, which also included PCP, Livre and PAN.

“I would highlight as the first conclusion of these meetings a desire to prevent setbacks, from the outset constitutional setbacks. Portugal has made a path in affirming fundamental rights, Portugal has placed itself at the forefront, in Europe, in the world, in guaranteeing rights, freedoms, and We are not willing to give up on the path we have taken so far”, stated Mariana Mortágua.

BE concludes from these meetings that there is “availability for articulation between parliamentary directions, between political directions, between the various parties, to coordinate their activity, initially in the opposition in parliament, but also for the future”.

It was a “first moment of dialogue”, which BE hopes will inaugurate “an open channel, a capacity for dialogue and conversation between these parties”, for a “stronger opposition” to the PSD/CDS-PP minority executive .

According to Mariana Mortágua, on the other hand, the “desire for this 25th of April to be a moment of enormous popular mobilization” and “celebration of democracy” was expressed, in which “the vast democratic majority takes to the streets, throughout its plurality”.

The XXIV Constitutional Government, formed following the legislative elections of March 10, has the support of 80 deputies — 78 from the PSD and 2 from the CDS-PP — out of 230, in a parliament in which the PS has 78 seats, Chega 50 , the Liberal Initiative 8, BE 5, PCP 4, Livre also 4 and PAN 1.

PCP and BE presented motions to reject the Government Program in the Assembly of the Republic, which were rejected on April 12, with votes against by PSD, Chega and CDS-PP and abstention by the PS.
