Amnesty International, having recently released its 2023 annual report on the state of human rights in the world, expressed its concern about the increase in the number of people subject to human trafficking in Portugal.

According to the report now known, the number of victims of this crime grew by more than 18%, according to Jornal de Notícias. According to the annual internal security report, and according to Amnesty International, 253 victims were reported in Portugal, of which of which 181 are related to cases of labor exploitation.

The most targeted sectors are agriculture and football.

At a national level, the districts of Beja and Leiria are referenced as those that record the highest number of this type of crime, with the issue of migrants remaining on the agenda as the victims of this type of crime are essentially people coming from countries Asians.

The report in question also draws attention to “low prosecution rates for suspects of domestic violence” and the “insufficient provision of shelter” for victims seeking safety, two situations that are also worrying Amnesty International.
