The harpsichords of “Abril on the Strings of a Guitar” performed by the Quarteto de Coimbra were heard at the Rocha Peixoto Municipal Library, on the 20th of April. The event was part of the program commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, and was organized by Póvoa de Varzim City Council in conjunction with the António Carlos dos Santos Cultural and Scientific Project.
There is a centuries-old musical tradition inherited by the Coimbra Quartet which, this time, gathered from the voices of José Afonso and Adriano Correia de Oliveira, the nonconformity, restlessness and restlessness of those who always believed that the doors of freedom would open with the ruin of censorship .
The afternoon at the Library was spent interpreting themes and arrangements by the great names of Canção de Coimbra, but also original themes, with time for poetry in the voice of Aurelino Costa.
Present at the April sing-along, the Vice-President and Councilor for Culture of the Póvoa de Varzim City Council, Luís Diamantino, highlighted the importance of celebrating April “every day” and never taking such hard-won freedom for granted.
The Coimbra Quartet, ‘armed’ in 2022, is a group of experienced musicians trained in that student city, who have undergone an elaborate study for the performance of the Song of Coimbra repertoire, having elevated the aesthetic and musical bases of a historical repertoire in Portugal. In addition to working on the city’s musical and cultural heritage, the Quartet has presented original songs, trying to contribute to this legacy.
