At least 300 people will participate in the 1st Congress of Artificial Intelligence in Dental Medicine: Intelligent Dentistry 2024 (ID2024), which will take place at the University of Algarve, in Faro, the president of the congress told Lusa today.

Organized by the Polytechnic and University Higher Education Cooperative, in the context of Postgraduate Studies in Digital Dental Medicine, the congress features national and international speakers who will focus on the contribution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the treatment of patients or the practice management, highlighted Teresa Vieira e Brito.

Classified as a “pioneering” initiative in Portugal, participation “exceeded expectations” and already has around 300 registered participants, a number that exceeds the 250 participants initially expected and which could still grow until the start of the congress, which is scheduled to open on Friday and continues until Saturday, he highlighted.

“This congress arises not only to publicize everything that is being done and thought that can be done in the area of Dental Medicine with AI, but also to create limits or question ethical and deontological limits and the relationship between the human part and the technology,” said the expert.

Teresa Vieira e Brito considered that AI can “provide better planning and treatment for the patient” and the Congress constitutes “a significant step for the area” and “a gigantic step for those who will benefit from everything that will be talked about and treated” during the meeting.

“We are going to start with some colleagues from IDDA, which is an international English association also in the digital area, and who will talk about what the future of Dental Medicine is”, he anticipated, about the first day of the program, referring to thanks to the participation of speakers Adam Nolty and Quintus Van Tonder.

Teresa Vieira e Brito also highlighted the participation of the Portuguese Margarida Henrique, who will speak on the importance of choosing color in Dentistry, and Fábio Guimarães, who has radiology companies in Brazil and has taken advantage of artificial intelligence both in his area and in the management of personnel, resources or the practice.

“We will also have André Chen, who is an expert in the area of oral rehabilitation and will, in essence, talk about enhancing tools in this area. And then we will have João Fonseca, who has one of the largest digital laboratories in Portugal,” he added, highlighting the importance of the latter’s “pioneer” work in digitally guided implantology.

The first day ends with Júlio Fonseca, who will talk about the “potentialities in the area he dominates most, which is the area of orofacial pain”, culminating a journey with a “very extensive, very rich” program both in terms of management, applied to the office, human resources or practice in this regard, he noted.

“Then, the next day [sábado]we have Florin Cofar, who is a world reference, both for his skills in Dentistry, in the area of aesthetics, as well as for being a creator, for developing tools and applications, such as the ‘Smart Cloud’”, he added.

The specialist took the opportunity to highlight the importance of this speaker’s work “not only in planning the treatment, but also in the dentist-patient relationship”, by helping to better understand what is proposed and what the final result will be.

Teresa Vieira and Brito believe that the conditions are right for Faro to host a Congress on AI in Dentistry for two days, “one of the best in the world” and for the organization to lay the foundations for a regular event in the future.
