Braga has already ‘opened’ the “Door to Freedom”

-

Braga City Council inaugurated, this Thursday morning, the work “Porta da Liberdade”, as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April.

The sculpture, designed by Alberto Vieira, features a half-open door with 50 carved carnations, and is installed on Avenida da Liberdade, at the intersection with Rua do Raio.

“The location of the sculpture is justified by its association with the ideal of freedom”, explains the Chamber, in a statement.

The name of this avenue, initially given in 1910 with the establishment of the republic, had been abandoned in 1935 during the period of the dictatorship and was rescued after April 25, 1974.

“The (re)conquest of freedom that the name of the avenue translates is also present in the sculpture – the door to freedom is always an open door to a path under construction”, can be read in the statement.

According to Ricardo Rio, president of the Chamber, the work gives a “physical dimension” to these celebrations: “Today is the day to celebrate and it was essential that this remarkable moment, in addition to all the activities that are taking place, had something that would leave a lasting mark on the city. This is a very expressive piece whose symbolism is completely aligned with the celebration.”

According to the mayor, by representing a half-open door, the sculpture “gives us a challenge of movement and change, at the same time that it forces us to make a collective effort to move forward and consolidate the achievements of April”. “It is precisely through this door of freedom, which opened on April 25, 1974, that we will be able to reach a better future”, he highlighted.

The commemorative program of the April Revolution continued with the solemn session of the Municipal Assembly, at Theatro Circo.

Throughout the day there are several initiatives in Braga to mark the 25th of April. The program can be consulted here.
