The concentration of pollen in the air is expected to reduce next week with low or moderate levels in all regions of mainland Portugal and the Islands, the Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SPAIC) reported this Thursday.

According to SPAIC forecasts for the week between April 26th and May 2nd, “a considerable reduction in the concentration of pollen in the atmosphere of mainland Portugal will be observed, with a low to moderate risk expected for patients allergic to pollen” .

This reduction should occur thanks to the “atmospheric washing” effect, which is caused by precipitation, which is expected to occur in mainland Portugal throughout the week.

According to Pollen Bulletin No. 06, sent to the Lusa agency, all regions of the Mainland and the Islands should register “low to moderate pollen concentrations in the air”.

In the atmosphere of the Continent, pollen grains from cypress, pine, oak, holm oak and cork oak trees and grassy herbs, plantain, nettle, sorrel and nettles (including parietaria) stand out.

Particularly, in the regions of Algarve, Lisbon and Setúbal, pollination of the chenopodium is observed and the first grains of pollen from the olive tree are also beginning to appear in these regions, including the Beira Litoral region.

In the northern and central regions of the country, birch pollination is observed.

In the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores, the pollen present in the atmosphere is predominantly from pine and cypress trees (and/or cryptomeria in the Azores) and from urticaceous herbs (including parietaria), plantain and grasses.
