This Saturday, Portugal won the 4×400 meter relay race at the Penn Relays, the largest and oldest track athletics competition in the United States, organized annually since April 21, 1895, by the University of Pennsylvania, at Franklin Field, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (United States of America).

The team made up of Ricardo Dos Santos, Erikson Tavares, Rafael Jorge and Omar Elkhatib won with a time of 3.05.97 minutes, defeating a team from Spain (Manuel Ovijardo, Júlio Arenas, David Garcia and Óscar Husillos), who ran in 3.06, 68. In third place was a team from Jamaica (Assinie Wilson, Malike Jamus King, Terry Thomas and Anthony Cox), with 3:07.54.

According to a note from the Portuguese Athletics Federation (FPA), the “participation was aimed at achieving a good result that could improve the average performance of the Portuguese team for entry into the World Rankings at both the European Championships in Rome and the Olympic Games in Paris”.

In this sense, and also according to the FPA, some of these athletes are now traveling to the Bahamas to join the teams that will participate in the World Relay Championships (women’s 4×400 m, mixed 4×400 meters).
