The Government stated this Saturday that “there was and is not in question any process or program of specific actions with the purpose” of reparation for the Portuguese colonial past and defended that it will be guided by “the same line” as previous executives.

“Regarding the issue of reparation to these States and their people for the colonial past of the Portuguese State, it is important to emphasize that the current Government is guided by the same line as previous Governments. There was and is not at stake any process or program of specific actions for this purpose”, says the executive, in a statement from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

In the text, the PSD/CDS-PP executive emphasizes that “the Portuguese State, through its sovereign bodies – namely, the President of the Republic and the Government -, has made gestures and cooperation programs to recognize historical truth with impartiality and impartiality”.

The President of the Republic defended this Saturday that Portugal must lead the process of assuming and repairing the consequences of the period of colonialism and suggested debt forgiveness, cooperation and financing as an example.

On the sidelines of the inauguration of the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom, in Peniche, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was asked to clarify statements made on Tuesday, during a dinner with foreign correspondents in Portugal, stating that Portugal must “assume full responsibility ” for what he did in the colonial period and “pay the costs” and which deserved criticism from Chega, IL and CDS-PP.

Asked to clarify his recent statements on the matter, the President of the Republic highlighted that, throughout his presidency, he has defended that Portugal must “lead the process” in dialogue with these countries.
